From 1790-91, Kamehameha and thousands of his men constructed Pu'ukohola from heavy lava rocks passed over by a human chain from the distant valley of Polulu. It was certainly not an easy undertaking, as Puukohola Heiau measures in total 224 by 100 feet with 16- to 20-foot high walls. During the dedication ceremonies, Keoua Kuahu'ula (somehow convinced to be in attendance) was killed and offered as a sacrifice to Ku. Keoua's death allowed Kamehameha to take control of the Big Island of Hawaii and move one step closer to his destiny of uniting the Hawaiian Islands.
