Back on the road, at the junction of Highway 270 and Highway 250, take a load off at the revitalized town of Hawi. Until the 1970s, Kohala Sugar was the main employer in this region, and "sugar was king". The historic town is now filled with fun shops, tasty restaurants, and colorful art galleries, all housed in old plantation-style buildings. Hawi makes for a great pit stop for lunch and mementos.
