Life in the region changed dramatically in 1946 when the destructive April Fools Day tsunami came crashing along the Hamakua Coast and directly into the valley. Fearful residents moved out of Waipio after the disaster and left the valley to those who seek a return to a simpler lifestyle of taro farming and fishing for sustenance.
