First, look for the Laupahoehoe Point sign near mile 27 to reach lonely and rugged Lapahoehoe Beach Park. A feeling of sadness and tragedy clings to Laupahoehoe (leaf-lava) and visitors are moved... to discover that during the April Fools Day tsunami of 1946 (April 1, 1946) which originated from an earthquake in the Aleutian Islands, twenty students and four teachers were swept away to sea when the local schoolhouse was crushed by a wall of forceful water.
