Standing on the jetty today and looking out onto the rough sea, one can only imagine the absolute horror of that sorrowful day. Pay your respects to those who drowned at the small memorial dedicated simply to "those who lost their lives in the tidal wave." An old photograph from our collection shows the topside view from the Laupahoehoe Point Overlook before the destructive tsunami hit in 1946. Compare that idyllic image with a current view of what remains on the Point today.
