Hilo Bay's view out onto the ocean is mesmerizing and everyone (from tourists to fishermen to paddlers) is rightfully drawn to it. Look for a lesser-known copy of King Kamehameha's statue at the Wailoa River State Park. |

From his perch, Kamehameha watches over beloved Hilo's half-moon bay and the surrounding region, at one time the center of his political power. It's power of another kind though (think Mother Nature's unrelenting strength) that has affected and reshaped Hilo most dramatically in the last century. |
