On April 1, 1946, a 7.8 earthquake near the Aleutian Islands generated the infamous April Fools Day tsunami that struck with devastating force in Hawaii. 159 people lost their lives across the islands, with 122 of the casualties from the Big Island of Hawaii. It is estimated that $26 million dollars (based upon 1946 figures) in damages were sustained at that time. |
