On Highway 130, look for the serene Star of the Sea Church, built in 1927 by Belgian-born Father Evarist Gielen. The church's colorful interior is painted to tell the uplifting story of Father Damien de Veuster, famous for his work with Molokai's leprosy (Hansen's disease) settlement. |

Previously located in the town of Kalapana, the church was moved to safety by the loving community to its current location during Kilauea's powerful lava flows in 1990. |
