King Kamehameha I (the Great), after uniting the Hawaiian islands in 1810 under his rule, returned to the island of his birth in 1812 and built his personal compound in the ancient fishing village of Kailua-Kona. He lived until the year 1819 at Kailua Bay, on the same land where the aptly named King Kamehameha's Kona Beach Hotel (75-5660 Palani Rd.) now stands. |

Tiny Kamakahonu Beach fronts the hotel and is gentle enough for children of all ages to use. Adjacent to the calm beach, look for the well-maintained Ahu'ena Heiau, Kamehameha's sacred temple dedicated to Lono, the god of peace and fertility. |
