Although a peaceful location to visit today, Stanley is where a Japanese-run internment camp operated during World War II. As well, on December 25, 1941 - the last day of the Battle of Hong Kong, Japanese troops stormed into St. Stephen's College in Stanley (which had been serving as a military hospital) and bayoneted and killed 56 previously wounded British and Canadian soldiers. The Japanese soldiers also brutally attacked the medical staff and is said to have raped a number of nurses and civilians in this bloody incident known as the St. Stephen's College Massacre.
