In the old days, successful families built large walled villages or complexes to house their growing clan. Most preserved walled villages in Hong Kong can now only be found in the New Territories and a finely preserved Hakka one named the Tsang Tai Uk is located in Sha Tin. First built in 1848 by a wealthy merchant named Tsang Koon-man, the complex is connected by various entrances and courtyards. Feel free to sneak a peek but be mindful of the families that still live in the complex!
