You will be happy to learn that early Hawaiians considered themselves to be intimately connected to the natural world.  Through a practice called malama'aina, Hawaiians cared for the land as if it was an extended member of their own family (ohana).  Natural resources from farming and even fishing were regulated so as to maintain a sustainable lifestyle. Within each land division (ahupua'a), precious water sources flowed down from the mountain to the ocean, serving agricultural and daily living needs.  Pollution of life's important resources was simply not tolerated and Hawaiians long ago adopted important and necessary conservation techniques.
