Driving down after mile marker 7, you can choose between taking Kokee Road (552, which leads you to the nearby town of Kekaha) or Waimea Canyon Drive for different vantage points of the coast.  Keep an eye out for a wonderful overview of Waimea town below as well as the "Forbidden Island" of Ni'ihau located 15 miles across the channel. Niihau, one of the eight major Hawaiian islands, is 69 square miles in size and privately owned.  King Kamehameha V sold the island to the Sinclair Family in 1864 for ten thousand dollars.  Still under their descendants' watch, about 150 islanders continue to live in the old way, with little electric power or modern headaches.  Niihau is best known for its beautiful leis crafted from tiny seashells.
