Hawaiians have long grown crops such as taro and sugar cane in peaceful Hanapepe Valley.  Driving out of town, keep an eye out for the Hanapepe Valley Lookout on the highway near mile marker 14 for a wonderful view of the scenic landscape.  This gentle setting was the unlikely site of Kauai's bloodiest battle. Humehume, the son of the late King Kaumuali'i of Kauai, started a revolt in 1824 against the new united government led by King Liholiho.  Well-armed troops quelled the uprising during bloody battles that lasted 10 long days.  Hanapepe is decidedly a more welcoming destination today.
