From Lanai Airport, the shuttle bus connects to Kaumalapau Highway (Hwy 440) as it gently makes its way toward the beautiful Four Seasons Resort Lanai, The Lodge at Koele. The surrounding fertile land you first encounter is actually an ancient volcanic crater site known as the Palawai Basin. Native Hawaiians once cultivated sweet potatoes and taro here, but under the guidance of James Dole beginning in 1922, the rich land served as home to what would become the largest pineapple plantation (15,000 acres) in the world. Pineapple would remain king on Lanai until 1994, when production was finally halted due to rising labor and shipping costs.
