After indigenous Hawaiian residents (who had previously lived on this land for at least 900 years) were transferred away by law from the counties of Kalawao and Kalaupapa, the first group of nine men and three women afflicted with leprosy were brought by ship to Kalawao on January 6, 1866. By late that year, the settlement had already grown to house over 150 people. |
