In 1946, with the introduction in Hawaii of sulfone drugs as a cure for leprosy, the disease was finally considered treatable and containable. Hawaii's isolation laws however, were not abolished until 1969. Today, life is simple and slow-paced for the remaining community members on the peninsula as fewer than 20 former patients continue to live in Kalaupapa. |
