A drive of two-plus miles will lead you to the area of Kalaehi (White Rock) where legend has it a young boy named Kaulula'au defeated the spirits that once haunted "uninhabitable" Lanai. Kaulula'au was banished to this part of Lanai by his father Chief Kakaalaneo as punishment for pulling up most of the breadfruit trees in the district of Lele (ancient name for Lahaina), Maui. Expecting his son to possibly be harmed or even killed by angry spirits, Kakaalaneo instead saw the dancing flame of Kaulula'au's nightly fires all the way from the shores of West Maui nine miles away across the 'Au'au Channel. The chief's young son had triumphantly vanquished the ghosts of Lanai and proved that the small island was indeed habitable.
