Tourism and development, embraced by some and deeply questioned by others, have walked a delicate line in playing an accepted role in the local economy. After all, those who live on Lanai and Molokai only have to glance across the water at the islands of Oahu, Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island of Hawaii to see the pros and cons of further change and development. Citizens are rightfully wary of businesses and investors who, knowingly or not, alter the local landscape, community, and lifestyle forever through a simple search for profits. What passes for progress the world over continues to encroach upon Lanai and Molokai, and local residents are certainly not naïve about such matters.
