Heading back in the opposite direction, follow a short trail south just past the coastline to find one of the most beautiful views in all of Hawaii - Pu'u Pehe (Sweetheart Rock). Hawaiian legend tells the story of a beautiful girl named Pu'upehe who drowned in a nearby cave. In mourning, her lover Makakehau buried Pu'upehe on the summit of Sweetheart Rock (where an ancient bird shrine is said to be located). Makakehau then leapt to his own death in the treacherous waters below in order to join his beloved in the afterworld.
