Haleakala last erupted in 1790 but the volcano is still considered only temporarily inactive. The stunning and colorful landscape of the crater holds evidence of its hidden strength and eruptive powers.
It is said that the island of Manhattan would easily fit within the crater's measured 27 miles in circumference.
