Pa'ia is an old plantation town created in 1880 when the Alexander and Baldwin Co. built its first sugar mill here.  At one time, camps above the town housed 10,000 workers.  A short drive up Baldwin Ave. will bring you face-to-face with remnants of the original mill. Look for the Great Paia Peace Stupa at the Maui Dharma Center, blessed by the 14th Dalai Lama in 2007 during his visit to the island.  A little further on is the Father Damien Memorial at the New Holy Rosary Church.
