The rural areas of Ha'iku and Pa'uwela are known for their once thriving pineapple plantation villages.  Beginning in the 1850's, companies such as the Haiku Sugar Company were instrumental in attracting pineapple planters and processors to the region. Today, small communities promoting graceful country living have sprouted alongside the productive farmland.  Look for health-oriented attractions like The Studio Maui (offering classes in yoga, dance, and other movement forms) as you drive through peaceful Haiku.
