There is said to be a pool at Waianapanapa that inexplicably turns red once a year.  Scientists claim that red-colored shrimp in the water create this annual spectacle.  Hawaiian legend however, tells the sad tale of Chief Kakae and his wife Popoalaea.  Kakae was an unreasonably jealous man who became convinced that his wife had been unfaithful to him. Afraid of her husband's temper, Popoalaea hid in a cave, coming out only at night to gather food.  Kakae inadvertently discovered Popoalaea's hiding place one day by spotting her reflection in the water.  Enraged, he entered the cave and murdered the one person who truly loved him.  The periodic blood-red water at Wai'anapanapa serves as a reminder of this terrible tragedy.
