Charles Lindbergh, the famous aviator, lived here for a time and was buried at the local Palapala Ho'omau Congregational Church in 1974.  Stricken with cancer and adamantly wanting to fly home to Maui, Lindbergh told his doctor, "I'd rather spend two days alive on Maui than two months alive in this hospital here in New York City." Although difficult to find, visitors today can pay their respects to the "Lone Eagle" at the simple limestone coral church.  On Lindbergh's dignified headstone are two lines from Psalms 139: "…If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea…"
