Look for the attention-getting Iao Needle, a cinder cone that rises 2,250 feet to the sky.  Deeper in Iao Valley is Puu Kukui, West Maui's highest point at almost 5,800 feet.  The idyllic landscape served as a backdrop to the famous and bloody battle that took place here in 1790… between King Kamehameha the Great's men and the opposing Maui forces.  Kamehameha (destined to unite the islands in 1810 as a single ruler) and his men defeated so many Maui warriors that Iao Stream turned a bloody red from their fallen bodies.
