A very popular port during the heyday of the whaling industry in the mid-nineteenth century, Lahaina served as ground zero for both seamen in search of pleasure and the righteous New England missionaries who came to battle their sins. Look for Hale Pa'ahao (stuck in irons house) on Prison Street. |

This is the old prison built in 1852 to deal with any lawbreaking whalers. Herman Melville, author of Moby Dick is known to have visited Lahaina while working as a simple whaler. As well, James Michener used the town as inspiration for parts of his epic novel Hawaii. |
