But you can't talk about Makaha without talking about Hawaii's First Lady of Surfing.  Surfer Rell Sunn, known as the Queen of Makaha, was Hawaii's first female lifeguard and established the Menehune Surf Contest for children at Makaha Beach.  Rell also assisted in organizing the Women's Professional Surfing Association and the women's pro surfing tour. She lost her battle with breast cancer in 1998 and at a memorial service attended by over 3,000, her ashes were scattered over the waters of her beloved Makaha.  The people of Hawaii fondly remember Rell Sunn and her inspiring words "The aloha spirit is real simple. You give and you give and you give . . . and you give from here (the heart), until you have nothing else to give."
