From the 1850s on, thousands of Chinese laborers were brought to the islands to work on Hawaii's sugar plantations. Planning and saving while serving out their contracts as manual laborers, an enterprising group of Chinese began to open up various small businesses in the downtown district known today as Chinatown. |

This is the place to come to visit temples, restaurants, herb shops, and flower stands. When passenger ships docked at the pier in the 1920s and '30s (aka Boat Days), Chinatown was usually the first exotic destination passengers would visit. During the war years, infamous Hotel Street was where lonely servicemen would find solace through drink and company. |
