Kalakaua's sister Liliuokalani, succeeded him to the throne in 1891. Queen Liliuokalani was determined to strengthen the monarchy's powers as well as the voice of the Hawaiian people through a new constitution. U.S. and European interests, concerned for their safety and even more so for their property, formed the Committee of Safety in 1893 to oppose the Queen's plans. |

On January 16, 1893, the situation escalated as U.S. Government Minister John Stevens ordered a group of uniformed Marines and sailors to come ashore to "enforce neutrality". Queen Liliuokalani was deposed of her powers by the next day. |
