Kalakaua's sister Liliuokalani, succeeded him to the throne in 1891.  Queen Liliuokalani was determined to strengthen the monarchy's powers as well as the voice of the Hawaiian people through a new constitution.  U.S. and European interests, concerned for their safety and even more so for their property, formed the Committee of Safety in 1893 to oppose the Queen's plans. On January 16, 1893, the situation escalated as U.S. Government Minister John Stevens ordered a group of uniformed Marines and sailors to come ashore to "enforce neutrality".  Queen Liliuokalani was deposed of her powers by the next day.
