Makapuu Point looms 647 feet above the blue Pacific Ocean, and is home to the famous Makapu'u Lighthouse (1909).  Visitors take a tiring 2-mile roundtrip hike from Makapuu Point State Wayside Park up the cliff to see the automated lighthouse and the panoramic view of the surrounding coast. The sight of adjourning Makapuu Beach Park and its daring bodysurfers are stunning from up here.  Just offshore, both Manana Island (Rabbit Island) and Kaohikaipu islet serve as state seabird sanctuaries.
