The Japanese renamed Singapore as “Syonan-to” which translates as “Light of the South”.  For many people of Singapore, it seemed as if darkness had descended upon the island instead.  It has been said that 60,000 imperial troops were taken as prisoners of war during Singapore’s fall and most either ... suffered in prison camps or were sent by the Japanese to build (and often die building) the infamous Death Railway that connected parts of Thailand to Burma.  In a purging process known as Sook Ching, up to 50,000 Chinese in Singapore were massacred by the Japanese military during the war years.
