Although it’s possible to walk around many parts of Singapore (especially in the Historic District), cabs and public transportation are widely available to aid in your sightseeing. Just a short walk in the Historic District will begin to show you how Sir Stamford Raffles attempted to organize the growing city into districts of commercial and ethnic subdivisions in the famous Plan of the Town of Singapore of 1822.  Raffles built his own residence on the hill now known as Fort Canning Park to watch over the young colony he had created.
