The large field known as The Padang is now used mostly for leisure, exercise and sporting events.  On February 16, 1942 however, a day after the Japanese conquest of Singapore, allied troops and European prisoners were gathered here prior to a harsh 14-mile march to their internment in Changi. Visit the adjoining Esplanade Park to view various monuments including the Cenotaph (in memory of those who lost their lives in the World Wars), the Lim Bo Seng Memorial (in honor of the Singapore war hero) and the beautiful Tan Kim Seng Fountain (in honor of the important Chinese businessman and philanthropist).
