Religion of course played an important part in the lives of Singapore’s multiple ethnic groups, especially during the colony’s early days.  You will notice that important mosques, temples, and churches abound in Singapore.  In the Historic District, look for St. Andrew’s Cathedral, an Anglican Church built in an Early Gothic style, at 11 St. Andrew’s Road. First completed in 1837, the current Cathedral is actually a second Church that was rebuilt circa 1860-62 after the first one was twice struck by lightning and condemned.  Cathedral of the Good Shepherd (circa 1832) at ‘A’ Queen Street, and St. Joseph’s Church (1851) at 143 Victoria Street are two outstanding examples of Roman Catholic Churches on the island.
