The author continues “The more ornate and elaborate residential terrace houses made their appearance with the rise of the wealthy Chinese merchant families from the late 19th century onwards, especially among the Straits-born, or Peranakan Community. ... The entire material culture of the “Nonyas” and “Babas” evolved into an eclectic hybrid of Chinese, Malay and European Classical elements, from food and dress, to interior décor and furniture, and so it was with their architecture.”
