In the 1790s, British Captain George Vancouver gifted five head of maverick cattle to King Kamehameha I. For the next two decades, the wild cattle were allowed to breed and roam freely in northern Hawaii. In 1815, a young sailor and adventurer named John Palmer Parker was asked by... King Kamehameha I to contain the growing number of cattle by shooting parts of the herd, salting and selling the beef to ships in dock. The trade was good and as Parker's influence grew, he was also fortunate to marry Kipikane, Kamehameha's royal granddaughter in 1816.
