Starting with an original two acres of land purchased for the sum of $10, John Palmer Parker continued to flourish with his trade of beef, tallow, hides, and vegetables. By the 1830s, Parker found it necessary to contract Mexican cowboys to help train local Hawaiians in the skills of riding, roping, and working with cattle. Historic Parker Ranch was officially founded in 1847, and with an additional 640 acres of pastureland granted to Kipikane, business continued to boom. Parker Ranch grew to become the largest single ownership cattle ranch in the world, and its paniolos today watch over 30,000 head of Angus and Cahrolais cattle on the rolling plains.
