While in town, a dark side to the history of Hawaiian plantation life can be found at the Katsu Goto Memorial, located next to the small Honoka'a Library. Katsu Goto was one of the first Japanese contract workers to come from Japan to work as a laborer in Hawaii's sugar plantations. Although the work was difficult, Goto was disciplined and saved his money to open a general store upon the completion of his three-year contract. The small store became a meeting place for fellow immigrants, and Goto was well respected by members of the local Japanese community.
