On May 23, 1960, an 8.6 earthquake in Chile generated another powerful tsunami that struck the Hilo coast of the Big Island of Hawaii. There were 61 casualties locally and damages totaling over $23 million. Having learned from the recurring natural disasters, Hilo townsfolk... rebuilt and this time moved buildings and businesses further inland while turning Hilo Bayfront into a memorial park. Along Kamehameha Street, look for the handsome clock with its hands forever stopped at 1:04 a.m., in remembrance of the moment when the terrifying 1960 tsunami first hit Hilo.
