Fight any temptation to pick-up and keep pieces of lava rock as souvenirs. According to legend, Halemaumau Crater at Kilauea Caldera is home to Pele, the Hawaiian goddess of fire.
It is considered bad luck to keep rocks for personal use and Park Rangers receive many packages each year with returned lava rocks and accompanying notes written to Pele detailing sad events and regret.
