The Puna District has known its share of sadness and calamity. On November 29, 1975 a local 7.2 earthquake occurred near the fishing village of Kalapana that was followed by a moderate-sized tsunami that killed two campers, injured twenty-eight, and caused an estimated four million dollars in damage (based on 1975 figures). This was just a prelude of things to come. In the years following the earthquake, lava flowing down Kilauea's East Rift Zone destroyed multiple homes and regional communities all along the coast.
