The small towns of Kalapana and Kaimu were both completely lost in 1990 to flowing streams of destructive lava originating from Kilauea's vents. By the time President George H.W. Bush officially declared Kalapana a disaster area on May 18, 1990, the town and the hopes of its residents had effectively vanished. |
