Built in 1912, the historic bridge welcomes all except larger vehicles (15-ton weight limit), so Hanalei and the sites beyond are spared from the burden of busloads of tourists.  Polite behavior is the norm here for crossing this and all of the subsequent single lane bridges. All of the vehicles on one side drive carefully across the bridge while cars on the other side wait patiently.  When traffic has cleared from the first side, the waiting line of cars then proceeds from the opposite end.  It's a simple and efficient system that has been working for as long as I can remember.
