A mile further up the winding and potholed road that you drove in on is the more isolated Pu'u o Kila Lookout.  With few tourists at this end of the road destination, it is definitely worth the extra walk up to this second spectacular vantage point of Kalalau Valley. Arrive early in the morning to avoid the clouds, or drive up during the sunset hour to see the radiant change of colors.  The air is incredibly... clean and fresh, scented by sweet mokihana berries and Norfolk Pine trees.  Active hikers can carefully plan ahead and take Pihea Trail until it intersects with the Alakai Swamp Trail to visit Kauai's hidden wetland.  As you take in the peaceful scenery, make note that the mountain rainforest is home to rare species of birds and plant life, many of which are on the endangered species list.
