Once the capital of Kauai, Waimea is where in 1778, Captain James Cook and his crew first set foot in the Hawaiian islands. The site of Cook's landing is today called Lucy Wright Beach Park. A nice photo opportunity is the majestic Captain Cook Monument set in the center of town. |

Nearby, Russian Fort Elisabeth State Historical Park is the site where a misguided German named Dr. Georg Anton Scheffer built a fort after befriending King Kaumuali'i in the name of Russia in 1815. Dr. Scheffer misrepresented himself to the King however as he didn't actually have the voice to speak for Russia's ruler, and ultimately was encouraged to leave Kauai in 1817. |
