Waimea is also where New England missionaries arrived in 1820 to set up the first of Hawaii's many missions and churches.  The Waimea Hawaiian Church (located on the road through town) still conducts services in the beautiful Hawaiian language for its congregation.  From the 1800's to the early 1900's, Waimea served as a center of commerce in the islands. Fur, sandalwood, cattle, taro, sugar, and rice were all transported to and from the pier at Waimea Landing.  By 1930 though, the harbors at nearby Port Allen and Nawiliwili in Lihue replaced Waimea as bettered suited ports of call.  Today, the local pier serves as a community landmark and can be accessed via Kahakai Road near the ocean.
