Into this maelstrom walked Father Damien (Joseph De Veuster) in 1873, and although he was not the first to arrive at Kalawao to give care and direction to those afflicted with leprosy, he was the first to care enough and volunteer to stay. During his years of tireless work at the settlement, Damien brought a sense of order and purpose to the community. Armed with organizational and carpentry skills, Damien (with the help of residents) built churches, schools and approximately 300 homes for the people in Kalawao.
