Death was always on the way however, and after sixteen years of touching and dressing wounds, sores and stumps, burying a continuous flow of the dead, and fighting in the strongest manner for the daily and spiritual needs of those in his care, Father Damien died of the dreaded disease himself on April 15, 1889 at the age of 49.
