In 1978, a second voyage was planned by the Polynesian Voyaging Society for the traditional sailing canoe Hokule'a to journey to Tahiti on the open seas.  Eddie Aikau, in a quest to learn more about... his Hawaiian heritage, was accepted as a member of the crew.    The Hokule'a ceremoniously departed from Oahu on March 16, 1978, but that very evening ran into bad weather near the islands of Molokai and Lanai.
